Coming off such an emotional win as the previous game, I was hoping the Cards wouldn’t fall into a trap. A lot of times you’re emotionally exhausted after such a powerful win that you tend to lose focus in the next one. Further doubts were added because Steven Strasburg, one of the best young pitchers in the game was pitching against Jaime “Mr. Meltdown” Garcia. Well, such reservations were unnecessary. Though he ran into a little trouble in the sixth and Matheny opted to replace him rather than let a game get away, Garcia should be happy. He finally got his second win of he year. He should be 4-1, not 2-1 but the bullpen struggled a bit earlier in the year. But not today it didn’t. Though Rosenthal gave up a solo homer in the eighth, the bullpen was great, thanks to Joe Kelly and the “Chief” Edward Mujica, who nailed down his fourth save. Kelly pitched himself out of a two on and one out dilemma by getting a strike’em out, throw’em double play.
Hitting on the other hand, still not where it needs to be. A serious lack of power has me boggled, though it could be because it’s been so cold this early in the year. Matty Carp, Holliday and Molina provided the runs but they’re going to have to explode for more. Allen Craig and David Freese need to start it up, though I still give Freese a mulligan due to his back injury in the spring.
A day off tomorrow and they’re heading home for a three game set with the Pirates. Lance Lynn vs Jonathan Sanchez.
