With a fragile bullpen, Joe Kelly got the start and pitched very good going 5 2/3 innings. Unfortunately, Randy Choate and Mikhail Cleto did not, as the Cards fell 10-3 to Arizona. An error by Matt Holliday didn’t help things as well. The Cardinals couldn’t get the hitting untracked as well and a bad baserunning play by Carlos cost them a few runs. Some of the good was Matty Carp getting four hits and raising his average to .333 as well as extending his hitting steak to fourteen games as did David Freese to fifteen games. longest in the majors currently.
Sometimes you have these clunkers and games where you have to bite one and they did. The Cards persevered with a short bullpen and a short bench as Yadier Molina took his one game suspension. If they can even the series up they’ll gain a 1/2 game in the standings due to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati being idle. With Shelby Miller going up against Ian Kennedy, they have that chance.
